Research states that over half of all babies born in the UK today will now live to 100 years of age. The study, published in The Lancet Journal and reported by the BBC, collaborated data from more than 30 developed countries and shows that since 1950 the probability of living past 80 has doubled.

Professor Kaare Christensen, of the Danish Ageing Research Center at the University of Southern Denmark, leads the study. He believes that the increase in life span shows no signs of slowing down.

In 1950 the probability of surviving to between 80 and 90 years of age was approximately 15-16% for women and 12% for men. In 2002, these figures have risen to 37% for women and 25% for men. The study even mentions a possible new addition to the stages of life that we are used to.  Splitting old age in to ‘young old age’ and ‘old old age’.

The department of Health said rising life expectancy would have an impact on the future of England. This includes funding care services as well as every day life. Surely now, with life expectancy rising to a record high, it is time to look after our homes, and ourselves, more than ever?
